A report from the Resolution Foundation claimed that the UK was well below
other developed countries when considering the employment of older people.
The UK ranked only 15th out of the 34 countries who are members of the
Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in terms of the
percentage of over 50’s in employment. We employ about 15% less of our
over 50’s work force than the countries at the top of the league. Perhaps
more worrying was the fact that of those not in employment two thirds said
they wanted to work beyond retirement but the opportunities were not there.
A spokesperson for Age UK said “It is vital that employers make it easier for
over 50’s to find a job or continue working. This means stamping out age
discrimination, adopting age friendly recruitment policies or simply allowing
more flexible working.”
